Birds Plus

January 17th, 2008 · 4 Comments

We enjoy feeding the birds out back, among three different feeders plus a squirrel feeder. Larry took these photos recently, and I just love them. If anyone knows what the little black and white one is, it would be great to know. And some day soon, I’m going to trying drawing or painting one of these, if I can figure out which would be best – colored pencil, pastel pencil or simply pastels.

    Hi,
Gene says the black and white looks like a Caroline Chickadee to him.

The pips look like wrens with the one on the right like a Carolina Wren. Hmmm.

Nice photos, Larry is getting great with the camera.

    Jo & Gene –
So all the Carolina birds come here?? Thank you for helping me out – wish I knew birds better!

I heard rumor that Carolina birds can be found in Texas :)
    It is a boy chickadee.
The “Pips” on the left are sparrows…maybe rufus crowned, boy and girl, and the “Pip” on the right…my good guess is a female lesser finch.
Peterson Field Guides to Birds are great.

Ahhhh, W.C. Fields.. thank you, my little chickadee, for letting me know, and Mr. Gene too. I’ve been wondering for a couple of years what those birds were and couldn’t find them in my book or online. Doesn’t sound like they are a rarity. I’d forgotten your birding background, Leslie, and the owls you used to invite over. We’ve had painted buntings once in a while, but not last year.
