Virtual Sketch ~ Winter Farmhouse and Hillside

December 13th, 2008 · 21 Comments

This month’s Virtual Sketch subject is a great photo of a farmhouse on a cold winter day.  It made me feel cold just to draw it, and after ten years of living in Michigan, reminds me of why I live in Texas.  Beautiful but hard to bear for six months.

    Regina,

Just looking at your drawing makes me cold! Well done.

Boy, that does look chilly. Very nice. I like the way you handled the bare tree and trunks. Nice.

Beautiful details in this….especial the tree on the rights set off by the dark ferns….

Rose – So we can remember to look at this next August and feel cooler, right? Thanks! :-)

Jo – Once again, I had great plans for doing a pastel, but didn’t have time. I always like doing pencil drawings though. Thank you!

Carol & Sandy – Thank you both! I had to fix some perspective problems I finally saw, but like it better now.

I really like your drawing. It definitely has a frosty feel to it. I like the sideways strokes you used for the leaves on the front tree and the way the tree in the back is silhoutted against the evergreens.

Love love the tree on the right – the buildings are well done too

Very nicely done! I like the details in the buildings and trees.

Stacy – Thank you! I kind of experimented on the various strokes as I went along and enjoyed drawing this, but the buildings were sure a challenge.

Kathleen – thank you very much! Those buildings and windows were tricky, weren’t they? I love your pastel!

Great drawing Regina, with strong composition and style .

    That looks so COLD!!
I really like the negative space tree, too.
You like to play with pencil, and I can see it!

Sydney – Thank you. As an ex-drafter, it’s hard not to put in details. But you’d think buildings would be easier..

Jan – I love doing pencil drawings. Therapy.

Andy – thank you, I appreciate your comments. Stacy’s photo did the composition though. :-)

Leslie – Yes, it looks cold….. and depressing. That is how I remember ten years in Michigan. The negative space was an accident, but I kept it. Thank you, oh Queen of the pencil! You rule!

Accident? I don’t see an accident. It was an “on purpose”, and very effective.

The temp here today is in the 50’s and I am shivvvvering. I’m a sissy.

I’m just catching up and have to say: brrrrrrr!!!

  • 19 Regina // Dec 19, 2008 at 4:16 pm

Joanna – Yes, I agree! So glad to be here (most of the time…)

Lovely drawing. I especially like the positive-negative treatment of the trees on the right!

Laura – Thank you very much! Sometimes that happens by accident, but it can also make a complex combination of items easier to draw and to view.
