I think I have re-painted this specific painting (not just the scene) about four times. I kind of like it – the colors jumping around are interesting. This last incarnation is partly the result of painting with my pastelist friend Mike Etie, who paints in a very colorful and ‘painterly’ fashion. (You can see [...]

To blend or not to blend… is it a question?
October 16th, 2010 · No Comments
Looking at the last post, I really seriously didn’t like the painting. Sometimes I can’t tell that until I see a photo. Weird.
So I re-painted it and cropped it. And what the hell, I blended it too.
And layered more pastel here and there. I like it better. At least for today.
I haven’t had much [...]

Pastel sky painting without blending
October 11th, 2010 · No Comments
I can’t foresee ever tiring of painting the sky. The continual changing of colors, shapes, atmosphere is breath-taking, and to try to capture these once in a while is never boring.
On this one, I decided to try to do a pastel painting without any blending. It’s sooo hard. I know many pastelists who don’t blend, [...]

Pastel, 13″ x 13″ — (Click for larger view)
I’ve started a new series. I’ve never really even done a “series”, but decided a while back that I wanted to try something new. So I’ve spent the last few weeks having a lot of fun and working on the first couple of pastel paintings. These are [...]

Siamese Cat rough sketch
September 20th, 2010 · 2 Comments
This Siamese cat sketch in pencil was done from a main photo of my cat, with her standard superior expression, and collecting the coloring, head and body shape of Siamese cats from other photos. I actually did about six different drawings until I finally liked this one.
Once I had it the way I wanted it, [...]

Short sketches – disgruntled cat

It’s been a long dry summer in regard to finding time to draw or paint. Hopefully that situation is coming to a close, but not quite there. I did a quick sketch tonight of my cat sitting on my lap. I generally paint or draw from photos, but the materials and subject presented [...]

Here is a photo my husband took of a black deer in our back yard. We’ve seen this guy around the neighborhood since last year, growing up. Beautiful.

Inks Lake August
September 1st, 2010 · 2 Comments
I think I’ve become addicted to taking photos. I tell myself it’s because I hope to paint these someday soon, but I think I’m already set for life as far as subject matter goes. Inks Lake, from what I read, is the second busiest state park in Texas and it’s beautiful.

Sepia Drawings
August 24th, 2010 · 3 Comments
I wanted to do a small drawing that looked old, like the subject used to be… this is an anniversary gift, drawn from a photo, of a one room schoolhouse that was on my husband’s family land in Kentucky. He knew the building growing up – it’s gone now, but has special memories for him [...]

Color Poems
August 17th, 2010 · No Comments
Sometimes I update my “Colors” page, where I combine two things I love – color from a part of a painting (or a photo) of mine with a poem or just a few lines that seem to be illustrated by that color.
Here is my writing from today, which is a reminder to practice having a [...]
