Sky & Cloud Demo @ Texas Pastel Society, San Antonio

On Saturday, November 19, 2011, I’ll will be giving a demonstration on painting skies and clouds at the Texas Pastel Society. The meeting will start at 10-12 noon at the Tobin Library, 4134 Harry Wurzbach, in San Antonio.

My friend Jo Castillo sells a variety of items from her Cafe Press shop – I have a great rooster apron from her! I opened a shop there back in 2006, but have not done much with it. Since I’ve completed a few of my jungle animals, I decided to try it again. So here, if you are interested, are items for purchase, with a lion, elephant, or tiger… or one of my favorite trees. Choosing your painting subject – because it speaks to you or to a buyer?

Katherine Tyrrell of Making a Mark blog had a great post of the most wanted paintings on the web, a study done about 15 years ago. The study had different results for different countries, but apparently for the USA, if you are painting medium-large historic-appearing landscapes of wild animals near a lake, you are good to go.

If you usually painted small still-lifes, would you completely change your subject in order to make more sales or appeal to a larger audience?

I guess all artists and writers have to come to terms with that, if they want to make a living in their chosen field. Then we learn the art of compromise….

The last couple of months have been spent enjoying the time I could spare creating art while wondering, yet again, why we do art – especially during slow economic times when not many people seem to be interested in buying what we spend so much time planning, drawing, painting, judging..

And the very complex, intricate, convoluted answer I came up with – because it’s fun. It’s fun to create, it’s fun to use your imagination, it’s fun to play with color and application, it’s fun to see a piece evolve minute by minute, day by day. But we all need input from others and a dry spell in sales can give cause for a lot of self-examination. And too much focus on oneself.

Over the years, we’ve all known people who brought to mind the phrase “enough about me, what do you think about me?” So to guard against too much “me”, it’s necessary at times to get away from your own little self and see what is going on in the world – or at least in your part of it.

Yesterday, I was able to attend several art events exhibiting work by artist friends. One was the Real Gallery, part of the East Austin Studio Tour, which has an impressive number of artists and locations, and a wonderful variety of work. Another event was at a friend’s house, where we enjoyed inspiring music and a beautiful display of her art and technique. And lastly, a visit to another house where the art was created from wood – lovely work and design.

So it was nice, for a change, to not feel the pressure to sell my work – that’s why God made the space between walls and sofas – and to spend time enjoying and appreciating the fruits of other’s creativity.

ArtistCards on Etsy – cards and paintings

Since it would be good to make back some of my cost for art supplies, and for those who like my art, I’d definitely like to make it affordable…. I decided last Thursday to add my work to Etsy, a website for handmade items (including prints of artwork) and vintage things. My new shop is

There are only 9 items in my “shop” so far, but I hope to eventually make a card of each of my paintings. I have also listed two of my paintings on there for sale. It’s fun, if you haven’t tried it, and there are a lot of very unique and interesting items on Etsy.

Great Outdoors – Art Under the Oaks – WIP x2

Such nice people at the Great Outdoors Nursery here in Austin – they held an art event and I enjoyed the weekend in a very beautiful spot, talking with friends and painting pastels. These are two works in progress I started this weekend:

Great Outdoors Pagoda – Sally Fraser, Ann Seago and I collected plants, pots and a pagoda from around the nursery and arranged a still life suitable to the space. We each painted a pastel – here is the mostly finished one I painted:

Local (Austin) Upcoming shows and events

On May 2 and 3rd, 2009 ~ Sally Frazer, Ann Seago and Regina Burchett will have a booth at Great Outdoors “Art Under the Oaks” at 2730 S. Congress Avenue in Austin.

Chuck’s Deli at 12115 Manchaca Rd. in Manchaca does a great job of featuring local artists throughout the year. Regina and Diana Weems will be showing their work there in May, June and July of 2009, along with other area artists.

For the month of May of 2009, Regina’s work will again be at the best Starbucks (with the friendliest baristas) – 5400 Brodie Lane

“Break in the Storm Clouds” was juried into the Austin Pastel Society’s Annual Show, which is being held from March 1 – May 3, 2009 at Chase Bank Corridor of Art – 700 Lavaca, Austin.
